HIT LONGER DRIVES
The average golfer is always looking to get more distance off the tee, along with more accuracy. There are many reasons that the average player loses potential distance, some of which are related to the biomechanics of the golf swing itself but here we’ll just concentrate on two of the basic underlying causes of lack of distance.
By hitting longer drives and more accurate drives, you’ll be on your way to a lower handicap and a genuinely good golf swing. The methods taught in The Simple Golf Swing will teach you how to swing a golf club properly in a very short time, which is why I recommend the method very highly.
Now – about your swing: One of the biggest reasons for lack of distance is a lack of solid contact. To hit longer drives, you need an efficient as possible combination of club head speed and square impact. The club head must strike the ball squarely directly down the target line.
The second reason for lack of distance is a failure to properly ‘release’ the club. Many amateurs fail in this area and wind up either slicing the ball or blocking it, resulting in either a shot off line to the right or pulled to the left.
All right, what can we do about this problem? Here’s a quick drill you can use. First, put on a wrist watch in the conventional manner, that is, with the face on top of your left wrist. If you’re left handed, reverse this step.
Slowly take the club back and, as you slowly begin your downswing make sure that the watch face turns with the natural motion of your arm until it is facing straight down the target line at the impact point. Then, as you drive through the imaginary ball, your left forearm should rotate under your right, so that the watch face is pointing at the ground and your right forearm is on top of your left. That’s the proper release.
Put that together with making sure that you approach the ball in your downswing from the inside, and you’re on your way to eliminating that slice and/or block and, as a result, on your way to begin to lower your handicap. This will improve your golf swing mechanics greatly.
